Monolithic basalt stone and brushed brass boardroom illuminated for quiet executive focus
Architectural Framework
Perched on the 34th floor of a high-rise in Milan’s Porta Nuova district, the executive chambers for a European private equity fund feature floor-to-ceiling panoramic glazing framing the snow-capped Alps. The interior palette is uncompromisingly noble: honed dark basalt stone, smoked oak paneling, and patinated bronze millwork.
Executive work requires high visual acuity (minimum 500 lux maintained across the conference table and video-conference participants). However, corporate downlights typically create a chaotic ceiling dotted with glaring bright spots. This causes severe eye fatigue and produces intolerable reflections on the massive panoramic glass facade, obscuring the dramatic night panorama of Milan and the mountains.

The Concept of Luminous Absence
Metis Lighting adopted a dual-layer strategy: Darklight Downlighting combined with Concealed Perimeter Wallwashing. APERTURE M-60 darklight fixtures with deep 45° cutoffs cast high-candela light precisely onto the conference surfaces while appearing virtually unlit from normal sitting angles. Perimeter basalt walls are softly washed by KINETIC G-WALL, balancing eye pupil adaptation and eliminating heavy cavern-like contrast.
Selected APERTURE M-60 with dark specular vacuum-metallized secondary reflectors. The luminaire achieves UGR < 8.8 even at 2,200 delivered lumens. STYLOS O-12 12° pinholes with cross-hair nadir louvers were deployed over executive credenzas and sculpture plinths, while DALI-2 DT8 controls modulate color temperature from 3500K during business meetings to 2700K for evening client receptions.
Visual comfort in video conferencing reached unprecedented levels. The floor-to-ceiling glass wall remains completely transparent at night, without a single internal light reflection visible to board members looking out over Milan.

Glare-Free Video Conferencing in Glass Enclosures
Aperture cutoffs were mathematically calculated against 16:9 4K PTZ camera angles to avoid blooming lens flare in remote board meetings. All fixtures interface with an enterprise DALI-2 automation system equipped with automated daylight harvesting sensors along the glazed facade.
